The School of Mathematics and Statistics at Central South University was formed in May 2002 through the merger of the mathematics departments of the former Changsha Railway University, Central South University of Technology, and Hunan Medical University. The school comprises the Departments of Basic Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science, Probability and Statistics, the Higher Mathematics Teaching and Research Center, the Mathematics Experimental Teaching Center, the General Office of the Party and Government, and the Student Affairs Office.
The school currently has 135 faculty and staff members, including 112 full-time teachers. Among the teachers, there are 41 professors and 44 associate professors or equivalent titles. The school boasts renowned mathematician Professor Hou Zhenting, 2 recipients of the National High-Level Leading Talents Program, 8 recipients of the National High-Level Young Talents Program, and 20 recipients of various talent programs in Hunan Province. Seven faculty members serve on the editorial boards of important domestic and international journals and are heads of academic organizations.
The college began enrolling and training undergraduate students majoring in mathematics in 1977. Currently, it offers three undergraduate majors: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science, and Statistics. In 2012, it launched a pilot program for cultivating top-notch mathematics talents (a science class). The Mathematics and Applied Mathematics major was selected for the Ministry of Education's "Strong Foundation Program" and "National First-Class Undergraduate Major Construction Point" in 2019; the Information and Computing Science major was approved as a "National First-Class Undergraduate Major Construction Point" in 2020 and is expected to be selected for the Ministry of Education's "Strong Foundation Program" in 2025; the Statistics major was approved as a "National First-Class Undergraduate Major Construction Point" in 2022. The college boasts two national-level excellent courses, one national-level excellent online open course, and one international MOOC, and has won more than ten provincial and ministerial-level awards for outstanding teaching achievements. It has achieved remarkable results in previous National Undergraduate Mathematics Competitions and National Undergraduate and Postgraduate Mathematical Modeling Competitions. Young scholar Liu Lu solved the Seetapan Conjecture in his second year of university.
The college began enrolling and training master's students in 1978. In 1981, its second-level discipline, "Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics," was approved as one of the first doctoral programs nationwide and began enrolling and training doctoral students. The college currently has two first-level doctoral degree programs in Mathematics and Statistics, and two postdoctoral research stations in Mathematics and Statistics. The "Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics" discipline was listed as one of the first national key disciplines in 2001 and remained a key discipline during the "10th Five-Year Plan" and "11th Five-Year Plan" periods. Mathematics is a key discipline in Hunan Province and was selected as a national "Double First-Class" discipline in September 2017. The college's research areas include Markov processes and related fields, functional analysis and applications, ordinary differential equations and dynamical systems, scientific computing, partial differential equations and their applications, group theory and mathematical logic, optimization and control theory, applied statistics, and quantitative economics.
The college adheres to the principle of cultivating virtue and talent, focusing on talent training and scientific research, and continuously improving its educational level. In recent years, the college has formed several high-level research teams in cutting-edge research fields such as basic m
